Shetlander Marnie Baxter signs up for Between Weathers

Between Weathers' Jess: Marnie Baxter

Marnie Baxter - 'Jess'

Scottish actress Marnie Baxter has become the latest Shetland local to be cast in the upcoming Scottish movie Between Weathers.

Marnie grew up in Aith on the west coast of Shetland before leaving at 17 to pursue a career in acting, training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Marnie has been acting professionally ever since, enjoying a variety of roles in theatre, film, radio and television.

Marnie’s most recent film credits include the Scottish BAFTA nominated feature Running in Traffic and Conquering Heroes which will premier at Cannes this year. Her most recent television role was in ITV’s Identity, before appearing in a new comedy pilot for channel 4 called Sportstalker.  Marnie’s most recent theatre project was The Time Step, which she co-produced and starred in alongside director and actress Linda Marlowe.

London based Marnie said, “I am totally delighted to be joining the cast of Between Weathers.  Having grown up in Shetland it will be a real privilege to go home and be part of this exciting project, helmed by the wonderful Jim Brown at B4 Films.  The script is not just a funny yarn; it is a feel-good story that really captures the spirit of Shetland.”

Jim Brown said, “It has always been important for me to use Shetland people in the film.  Michael Powell did it in Edge of the World, giving his classic a wonderful sense of realism. I was delighted when Marnie got in touch, she’s a great actress who grew up in Shetland.  The moment that I met her in London I knew I had found my Jess.  Like Powell I have discovered some very good local talent living in the Islands.  Ria Moncrieff with play young Thomas’s mother, Dugald Gunn will take the part of young Thomas’s father and James Mackenzie has been cast as Lachlan, the father to Sharleen Spiteri and Dawn Steele’s characters Meg and Tyra.”

Jim said, “I was surprised by the amount of people who turned up and excited by their talent when I held the last open audition in Lerwick.  John Haswell from Shetland Arts made my life very easy by setting the whole thing up.  Finding Ria, Dugald and James on my first casting trip was fantastic.  I am still looking to cast another seven local people and am very hopeful that my next casting trip will be just as productive as the first.”
